As students across Nigeria gear up for another academic year, the Oke Umurhohwo Foundation is gearing up to provide support to indigent kids with our Back to School campaign once again. This cherished annual initiative aimed at empowering young children in rural communities has dedicated itself to providing essential school supplies, uniforms, and educational materials to children who would otherwise lack access to these critical resources for the bare minimum education available. This year, we decided to delay the intervention till the 14th of October, 2024 to give our partners more time to make this a reality.
In Nigeria alone, there is an estimated 10.5 million children who are out of school (UNICEF) and many more struggle to stay in school due to a lack of basic resources like books, uniforms and adequate learning facilities. This has come off unacceptable to us as an organisation because we know education to be a powerful tool that can break the cycle of poverty in families from less privileged locations. Because we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed irrespective of their circumstances, we aim (through this initiative) to ease the financial burden on families that want to send their children to school but do not have the resources by helping provide some of these learning essentials at the start of this new academic year.
Our Journey So Far:
In 2022, the Oke Umurhohwo Foundation began this impactful journey by visiting Ujode Primary School in Ughelli, Delta State. Our founder, Hon. Oke Umurhohwo personally donated essential writing materials to students, marking the start of the Back to School campaign. With over 50 pupils receiving notebooks and other supplies, Hon. Oke committed and is relentless in expanding support personally and with the foundation to the benefit of these children.
Building on our first campaign, our 2023 campaign expanded and reached three primary schools in Delta state with over 500 students as beneficiaries; Ighrwovie Primary School, Ekuigbo Primary School and Ujode Primary School. With thanks to the overwhelming support of donors and friends, we were able to provide:
- 2000 exercise books
- 50 school bags
- 45 reading guides
- 150 school uniforms
- 700 pieces of stationery
This was a feat for us because despite the dilapidated conditions of some of the schools…we witnessed the incredible joy on the faces of the students whose enthusiasm reminded us of the importance of this initiative. It was truly heartwarming to see their eagerness to learn, underscoring the transformative power of education which is something our founder is personally passionate about.
This year, 2024
So, this year 2024, we are looking to reach even more children. Our goal for this 2024 Back to School campaign is to provide school materials to 1,500 students across three key schools:
- Izomo Primary School, Eruemukohwarien
- Oharisi Model Primary School, Ughelli
- Ogele Primary School, Ughelli
In addition to distributing educational materials such as exercise books, uniforms, school bags, and stationery, we plan to take the initiative a step further by conducting a post-campaign drive for the renovation of one of the schools. This effort will focus on improving the learning environment, starting with addressing infrastructural challenges like crumbling classrooms and inadequate facilities that children in that area suffer.
Despite the prevailing economic situation in Nigeria presently, we are convinced that this is even the time that these kids need us the most. We believe that ours is a society that shares whatever little we have and protects the most vulnerable in our midst.
Support Us:
We cannot understate your role in ensuring the lives of these kids can have a glimmer of hope as you contribute to this campaign. We are open to receiving whatever you can afford, it will make a huge difference. Nevertheless, for those that want some sort of budgeting, the amount of N15,000 will get a child the following items below;
- 1 School bag
- Exercise books
- School shoes
Supporting this initiative may require that you dig deeper than usual but we believe in your ability to support. A child somewhere will be better for it because you gave.
