As the sun rose over Ughelli, the air buzzed with anticipation. Children once burdened by tattered uniforms and worn-out sandals were about to experience a transformation that would change their lives forever. This is the story of the Oke Umurhohwo Foundation’s Back-to-School Campaign, a heartfelt initiative that spanned from August 27th to October 9th, and culminated in two unforgettable outreach days—October 10th and 11th all in 2024.
The Journey Begins
Our mission was clear: to uplift and empower students from Izomo Primary School, Oharisi Primary School, Ujode Primary School, and an impromptu stop at Inene Secondary School. The journey wasn’t without its challenges, but each obstacle only strengthened our resolve.
A Day of Transformation
On the outreach days, the atmosphere at Izomo Primary School was electric. Children gathered around us with wide eyes filled with hope and excitement, waiting their turn to receive new uniforms and shoes. Many of them had walked to school barefoot, their feet dusty from the long trek. Yet their spirits remained high, radiating a readiness for change.
As we handed out the uniforms and shoes, delighted giggles and shy smiles spread through the crowd. One young boy, unable to contain his joy, slipped on his new shoes and bounced up and down, testing their fit. In that moment, we realized that these weren’t just articles of clothing—they were symbols of hope, of new beginnings. The schoolyard echoed with laughter and possibility, filling our hearts with joy.
Our next stop was Oharisi Primary School, where we were greeted by children in torn uniforms. Each rip and hole seemed to tell a story of hardship, but as we distributed fresh, crisp uniforms, we watched these students stand a little taller, their smiles growing brighter. The pride they took in their new outfits was palpable. Their eyes reflected a newfound confidence, and we were reminded why we started this campaign: to restore their dignity and empower them to dream big.
At Ujode Primary School, the environment was more challenging—classrooms worn from time, peeling paint, and thick bushes around the block. Yet, the students’ enthusiasm for learning was unwavering. As we handed out uniforms, exercise books, and school supplies, their faces lit up with gratitude. Each child clutched their new items tightly, as if holding onto the future they hoped to build. Their eagerness to learn, despite the difficult conditions, inspired us.
A Surprise Stop at Inene Secondary School
As our journey continued, we realized we still had extra supplies. A team member suggested we visit Inene Secondary School, which we had passed earlier. What we found was humbling—students sitting on the floor without chairs or lockers. But despite the conditions, their spirits were high. We distributed the remaining exercise books and supplies, and the students’ gratitude was overwhelming. Their smiles and enthusiastic nods served as a reminder of the power of education and the importance of our mission.
The Impact of Change
This campaign wasn’t just about uniforms or books. It was about becoming part of these children’s stories and helping them step into a brighter future. From one school to the next, we saw children move from despair to hope, from uncertainty to pride. Their transformation was remarkable, and we were reminded that real change happens one child, one smile, and one dream at a time.
As Barrister Edima Sharon, Director of the Oke Umurhohwo Foundation, perfectly summed it up:
“It was hectic, but the results were totally worth it. The smiles from the kids, the before-and-after moments speak louder than words.”
The photos from this campaign capture children in moments of triumph, their joy evident in every smile.
A Heartfelt Thank You
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from our community. To our dedicated team members and volunteers, thank you for pouring your hearts into this campaign. Your compassion has left an indelible mark on the lives of these children.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on this beautiful journey, we invite you to stay connected with us. In the coming days, we’ll be sharing before-and-after photos that showcase the powerful transformations and stories of resilience from our campaign. Together, we can continue to uplift and empower these children, ensuring that every one of them walks into their classroom with their heads held high.
Join us in celebrating their triumphs, and let’s keep the spirit of change alive.
